This 8-week course invites high school students to engage in a thoughtful exploration of two influential texts: Booker T. Washington’s Up From Slavery and Ibram X. Kendi’s How to Be a (Young) Antiracist. Through close reading, discussion, and critical analysis, students will examine each author’s vision for human flourishing, justice, and societal progress. Guided by a biblical worldview, students will evaluate these perspectives in light of scriptural principles, exploring themes of dignity, redemption, and God’s design for humanity. Conducted via Zoom, this course fosters critical thinking, respectful dialogue, and a deeper understanding of how faith informs responses to historical and contemporary issues of race. Assignments include reading responses, discussion participation, and a final reflective essay.
This group is open to students, ages 15 to 19.
Teachers: Laurie Oksanen (high school teacher) and Monique Duson
Meeting times: Thursdays at 4 PM (PT)/7 PM (ET)
Dates: September 11, 18, 25, October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30
Note for parents: Marketing for this event is tricky. We are advertising it on Facebook and our other platforms where teens don't normally hang out. So we know parents will likely see it first. Please do us a favor and make sure that your student actually wants to participate in this. We don't want them to feel coerced by their parents to show up. But if they are genuinely interested in being in the book club, we'd love to have them!
